Skerries-born karate athlete Sorcha McCorry has added yet more medals to her impressive national and International Championship achievements for Ireland alongside Francisco Astudillo Pena.
In a demanding year for training and attending a significant number of competitions, the Skerries native also managed to tie the knot with her Venezuelan born husband, Francisco Astudillo Pena, a qualified engineer, who is also an accomplished and experienced karate athlete and coach.
The karate pair had met regularly through international competition and seminars and in 2010 not only became world cup champions but also realised their mutual philosophies and paths in their karate life was alike giving rise, in part, to the Venezuelan moving to Ireland in 2016.
Recently Sorcha together with fellow Ireland team mates were presented with the newly designed Karate Ireland track suit....

There were two reasons to celebrate at a Skerries martial arts club recency when a pair of its members picked up medals in two national events.
The double celebration happened at the World Shotokan Karate-do Federation (WSKF) Club in Skerries where Shauna Fletcher, a Loreto student and club member from Skerries quite literally kicked off the celebrations.
The Balbriggan native took bronze at the WSKF National championships and within weeks was examined and successfully graded by a panel of international instructors from Ireland, Canada and Denmark headed by WSKF Chief Instructor Hitoshi Kasuya, Japan.
The young woman held her composure and nerve despite the enormous pressure of the examination weekend and was commended for her (kata) forms and her kumite technique (fighting).
The newest member of the WSKF Ireland club Skerries is Venezuelan athlete Francisco Astudillo....

Taikyoku Shodan
The Taikyoku series is a sequences of
Kata used in several Karate Organizations to developed the main core of the beginner students. The name Taikyoku
refers to the Chinese philosophical concept of Tajis ( "great pole" is a Chines cosmological term the
"Supreme Ultimate", state of undifferentiated absolute and infinite
potential).
The taikyoku katas were developed by Yoshihata Funakoshi and introduced by Ginchin Funakoshi to simplify the principles of the already Pinan/Heian series
Is
a special Kata to introduce to Beginners in the first step of Karate system,
Combined a series of block, attack and stance, ideal to developed the natural
reaction between defense and count attack, allows to the students to be aware step’s
sequences and right turn.
The
best method to teach this introductory Kata is the twist of sight, so the important
thing is the student understand how should turn by his/her right or left side,
previously to do the turn it has to be indicate to look at for the correct way,
right or left and then twist with all the body for this direction, most of the
young beginner find those movements so complicate due that their short
experience however as their practice for several time this process become easy.
The
drawing generated for this Kata is like an “H” so the student eventually does a
mental diagram of this patron on getting the right orientation.
Technique involved in the Kata
1. Chudan Oi Zuki
2. Gedan Barai
3. Zenkutzu Dachi
Check Point
Stance:
1. Do not open the tiptoe when moved forward.
2. Do not rise the heel when it rotate
3. Keep bent your front leg and stretched your back leg.
4. Keep always same height even when does the spinning.
Attack:
1. The trajectory of the fist have always to follow a straight line between Hikite and the last point of trajectory in oi zuki, Remember elbows in.
2. Shoulders down.
3. Shomen front hip rotation
Block:
1. Cross both arms to do Gedan barai, make sure one of this have to be straight while the other one is near the ear.
2. Twisting the hips in each Gedan Barai.

Irish Open 2017
The Cycle of the live is estrange
but at the same time interesting. On 10th of September one day after
that I arrived to Ireland was the “Irish Open 2016”, for me was exiting
experience inasmuch as shared for first time as a coach with Sorcha Mc. Corry
the lady who is my wife currently. After studied each competitor of high label we
set up our strategy, strategy which took us to the first place, we had to
identify the characteristic and performance from each competitor, our last
match was of high performance between stamina, strategy and honour, Sorch got
the first place. One year late Sorcha and myself can get worthy podium on Kata
and Kumite, the Sorcha’s challenge was not just participate on Kumite with high
performance otherwise on Kata as well, the result, 4 round to obtained the 4th
place. For my side, participate on Kata Veterna, Kumite and Kata Senior. This
year the tournament was the satisfaction to received squad from Canada,
Germany, UK, Belgium, Portugal, France, and Luxemburg among others. The ONAKAI
Body gave an excellent tournament, showing organization and punctuality.
Once again for us was a great
opportunity for improve and developed our Karate Performance, after Japan on August
which was a big challenge as well to this International tournament our preparation
now as a couple increase every day, our best effort has been put all the focus
on the basic technique, go back to the Elementary, understand that does not
matter if you are senior o high standard competitor otherwise if not give attention
to your elementary you never obtain excellent result.
We encourage for the best way,
focus on basic, Karate-do traditional, check each part of the Kata that you
like, which is the challenge and how can improved it, check the kihon, kihon
kumite and how can change slight for does something different that allows you
be shape and best.
We are on preparation now for the
Belgium Open 2017 on November, we are sure that we are going to give the Best.

WSKF FAMILY
With a sudden wish for sharing in a same picture after of called from Venezuela and Mexico Team, every delegation was encouraged to enjoy this moment in the end of XIII WSKF Championship 2017. To be honest, this was amazing time never seen before, I am sure that each member of WSKF feels that it is a great Organization able to join each country in one way, "A Big family". For me was a great honor to have sharing this Championship in company with Sorcha McCorry Astudillo who has been my support in the last year, WSKF means for me Family, union, friendship, fraternity, I found part of my way through Karate and the other part through WSKF. I have to be thanks full with Kamiyanagi Sensei who sadly passed away, Sensei H. Kasuya an icon on contemporary Karate, Sensei Fouad Korban reference to Venezuelan Karate, and Sensei Archibald Gooding son of God, each person gives the opportunity to grow. These persons have given to me, whereby I am very grateful. Is amazing how each year each member of WSKF trust more on the guidance of Kasuya Sensei and his philosophy of Live 'Budo'. Isn't just to make right Karate as a technique is visualize Karate as a whole where the other is important as you. This year my strong wish to the championship was to get a right harmony among Martial, respect, fraternity and familiarity, seeing a handshake, a hug after each match, even on casual catch up, meeting at any where and any time told me that my wish was fulfilled. I am so please for that and I am sure that each member are in same signal . I want to send congratulation and recognize to all country who took part of the XIII WSKF Championship, their Chef Instructor and delegations, Sponsors and the rest of persons who did possible this event. Special thanks to Ireland family how has received me with cordiality, Sensei Mark Sheridan, Sensei Leslie Hogan, Mrs. Collette Miles McCorry, special recognize to Kasuya Family specialty to Sensei Taro Kasuya and Mss.
